Mandala Wisata Wenara Wana or also known as Ubud Monkey Forest is a nature reserve and a complex of temple which located in Ubud area, precisely Padangtegal village. Here are approximately 340 monkeys which are known to the type of long-tailed monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) 77 adult males, 19 young male, 77 adult females, 1222 adolescents monkey 122 and 54 a baby. There are four groups of monkeys who occupy different areas in Monkey Forest. Monkey Forest (Mandala Wisata Wenara Wana) became one of the famous sights in Bali. Monkey forest is managed and owned by all people or villagers of Padangtegal Village and they are also in charge of maintaining and keep the sacredness of this place.
Besides as a tourist attraction, Monkey Forest also a research center and conservation. Monkey forest not only an important component in the spiritual life of the local people there, but also as a research place for many research institutions worldwide. From the results of the research that have been done, the monkeys not only live in a one area but also move to other area and they have their own goup and one of them become the leader of the group. Bali's monkeys are in the midst of a group composed mostly of females because te male monkeys usually migrate.
Monkey forest has a land area about 27 hectares and there are about 115 species of trees. In the forest there are also three big temples that are Pura Dalem Agung who was in the forest is where ware the monkeys live then The second is Pura Beji which consists of three main temples temples namely Mandala known as the temple of the gods of the water, temples Madia mandala the temple has a sacred pool and Puri Nista mandala is a public baths place when a cerony was held. The third is Pura Prajapati as a temple to the burial place. Therefore, this monkey forest is known also as the Bali sacred tombs. Sometimes there are certain traditional religious ceremonies such as a cremation ceremony or in Bali known as Ngaben Ceremony.
