Kerta Gosa also known as The old Court of Justce is one of the attractions in Klungkung regency, Bali which was built in 1686 by Dewa Agung Jambe. Taman Gili Kerta Gosa has unique characteristics which not owned by any other attractions. Kerta Gosa is a open building (bale) which is officially part of the Puri Semarapura (Semarapura Palace).

 

Kerta Gosa Located in Semarapura, next to the main market. Kerta Gosa has been renovated and preserved by the government. On the walls of Kerta Gosa there is a traditional Balinese carvings also there are two high-rise buildings called Bale Kerta Gosa and Bale Kambang (Folating Pavilion) also known as Taman Gili. Bale Kerta Gosa is a tall building which palced in the right corner after the entrance and the greater one is Bale Kambang (Floating Favillion) is located in the middle and surrounded by ponds so thats way it called Bale Kambang or Floating Favillion.

Not only the beautiful architecture of the building, but also on the ceiling of the Bale Kambang covered by traditionals paintings with Kamasan painting style. Kamasan is a village in the Klungkung district which famous by the characteristic wayang (puppet) painting. Kamasan paintings usually take an epics story like Ramayana or Mahabharata as the theme of the painting. Kamasan paintings are usually found in temples as a decoration that has many meanings.

Previously, the painting on the ceiling of Kerta Gosa made on a cloth, but in 1930 was restored and painted on plasterboard. The paintings on the ceiling of Kerta Gosa contain valuable spiritual lessons. If you looks more detail, in every part of the ceiling tells a different story and there is a part that tells the story about karma and reincarnation and other part describe every phase of human life from birth to death. The Painting is divided into six levels, representing the afterlife, and the top is nirvana.

Place of Interest - Kamasan Painting Style

Bale Kambang is a beautiful building in the center of the lotus pond. Kamasan paintings on the ceiling of Bale Kambang are depicting the epic story of Sutasoma. Both sides of the bridge towards to the Bale is guarded by statues representing the characters from the Sutasoma epic story (Maha Barata, Ramayana, etc.). The themes of the painting was indicate that the building functioned as a place for the royal family to held a religious ceremony for Manusa Yadnya rituals such as weddings and Metatah (tooth filing ceremony).

 

Kerta Gosa was ever functioned as a court hall during the Dutch colonial bureaucracy in Klungkung (1908-1942) and since the appointment of Ida I Dewa Agung Negara Klungkung as the head local authorities in Klungkung kingdom in 1929. In fact, the former court equipment such as a wooden chairs and tables that use engraving and paint Prade still there till now. The objects are evidence of indigenous heritage of traditional courts as it had been in force in Klungkung in the colonial period (1908-1942) and the period of Japanese occupation (1043-1945).
