Meaning of Goa Gajah is estimated from the word "Lwa Gajah", where the word "Lwa" means river. So that could be concluded that "Lwa Gajah" is as a hermitage or meditation place which located on the banks of the river. Name of Lwa Gajah was recorded in the book Negarakertagama, a book of ancient Javanese writen by Mpu Prapanca on 1365 AD. Goa Gajah temple was built on the brink. Go inside the cave, you will feel silence and quiet atmosphere with a bit dim light that illuminates the entire cave. On the sides of the cave there is a Ceruk (a hole with box shaped like the seat) which was used as a place where the rishi or Buddhist did meditation and samadhi. Inside the cave is like T, where on the left side there are 3 Lingga and on the right there is a statue of Ganesha (God of Siva Son, the body shape of the elephant-headed human body).
The area in front of the cave there are seven historic statues and six of them spouting water into a pond. To look at it more closely you need to walk down through some stairs. This sevens statue is referred as the incarnation of widayadari and Widyadara. The position of this statue is very symmetrical, where three statues of Widyadari placed on the right and the statue of Widyadara is placed on the left. Widyadara statue is placed in the middle, around of the Widyadari sculpture.
