Batuan village is one of the villages in Bali, Indonesia. The village was famous by their artworks and distinctive painting style which famous since 1930s as BatuanPainting Style. Batuan village was became the center of the largest painting and contains of many art galleries which managed by local people who have played a key role in promoting the arts in Batuan village. Batuan village also known by Batuan temple (Pura Puseh) and ancient Gambuh dance which performed every Purnama day (full moon phase).
Pura Puseh Batuan are part of of Kahyangan Tiga temple which is commonly owned by each village in Bali. In the section of central courtyard there is Bale Agung, Bale Kulkul and a kori Agung which looks so majestic stand as a doorway to the gods. Every temple have a part called Pretima, Pretima is sacred objects in the form of a small statue as a symbol of ancestral gods. Kori Agung is flanked by several giant statues symbolized as a guard. And next to the left and right Kori Agung flanked by two small doors as entry and exit of people to pray in the main courtyard of the temple. On the main page there are several shrines called Meru and Padmasana, functions as a place of worship for the Ida Sang Hyang Widi. And behind the temple there is a place to store wantilan archaeological objects.
According to historical records, Batuan Village estimated to have existed since 1000 years ago. The influence of Hinduism and India in the village is very obvious from the model carvings and small temples. In the 17th century, Batuan Village and the entire southern region of Bali is controlled by the royal family. The dominion ends because of a priest (Hindu religious leader) gave a "curse" causing them then they lose their power and dominion. The curse causes many of them scattered throughout the country. During the period 1947-1949, the majority of the population remained loyal to the Batuan Village Gianyar and oppose nationalism.
